Welcome, Worshipers!  Fifth Sunday in Lent – March 25, 2012 Organists: Barry Hay, Ann Sprengeler Worship services 8:30 a.m. & 10:30 a.m.; SS/BC 9:30 a.m.

ORDER OF SERVICE– SETTING TWO USED FOR SUNDAYS IN MARCH 2012

HOLY COMMUNION        The Lord’s Supper is being celebrated in our service today.  We do not practice Open Communion as churches do who invite everyone, or every Lutheran present, to commune with them.  Because the Lord requires that those who commune together be agreed in their faith and in the confession of His Word, we practice the Lutheran custom of “Close Communion.”  This means that only those approach the altar who are members of our congregation or of a sister congregation in the Church of the Lutheran Confession.  If you are not now a member of our congregation, and would like to commune with us in the future, please speak with the pastor.  He will be happy to supply you with what you need to know about our congregation’s faith and confession.

Opening Prayer P: O merciful Lord, who desires worshipers who will honor You in spirit and in truth, send Your Spirit to cleanse us from dead works to serve You in righteousness and holiness and to honor Your great and saving name for giving us Jesus, who is the expression of Your special, eternal love unto salvation to everyone who believes.  Amen.

Hymn 145

Invocation P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. ALL SING: Amen.

Confession and Absolution P: We have come into the presence of God, who created us to love and serve Him as His dear children.  But we have disobeyed Him and deserve only His wrath and punishment.  Therefore, let us confess our sins to Him and plead for His mercy. ALL: Merciful Father in heaven, I am altogether sinful from birth.  In countless ways I have sinned against You and do not deserve to be called Your child.  But trusting in Jesus, my Savior, I pray: Have mercy on me according to Your unfailing love.  Cleanse me from my sin, and take away my guilt. P: God, our heavenly Father, has forgiven all your sins.  By the perfect life and innocent death of our Lord Jesus Christ, He has removed your guilt forever.  You are His own dear child.  May God give you strength to live according to His will. ALL SING: Amen.

The Service of the Word

ALL SING: Lord, have mercy on us. Christ, have mercy on us.  Lord, have mercy on us. 1.  Glory to God, we give You thanks and praise; Of heav’nly joy and peace on earth we sing.  We worship You, to You our hearts we raise, Lord God, almighty Father, heav’nly King.  2.  Lord Jesus Christ, the Father’s only Son, You bore for us the load of this world’s sin.  O Lamb of God, Your glorious vict’ry won, Receive our prayer, grant us Your peace within.  3. Alone, O Christ, You only are the Lord, At God’s right hand in majesty most high: Who, with the Spirit worshiped and adored, With all the heav’nly host we glorify.

P: Let us pray. O Lord, look with mercy upon Your people, we pray, that by Your great goodness they may be governed and preserved evermore both in body and soul; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting. ALL SING: Amen.

First Reading – Old Testament – Leviticus 16:29-34 The Day of Atonement 29 “This shall be a statute forever for you: In the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, you shall afflict your souls, and do no work at all, whether a native of your own country or a stranger who dwells among you. 30 For on that day the priest shall make atonement for you, to cleanse you, that you may be clean from all your sins before the Lord. 31 It is a sabbath of solemn rest for you, and you shall afflict your souls. It is a statute forever. 32 And the priest, who is anointed and consecrated to minister as priest in his father’s place, shall make atonement, and put on the linen clothes, the holy garments; 33 then he shall make atonement for the Holy Sanctuary, and he shall make atonement for the tabernacle of meeting and for the altar, and he shall make atonement for the priests and for all the people of the assembly. 34 This shall be an everlasting statute for you, to make atonement for the children of Israel, for all their sins, once a year.” And he did as the Lord commanded Moses.

Second Reading – New Testament Epistle – Hebrews 3:1-6 Jesus is greater than Moses 1  Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our confession, Christ Jesus, 2 who was faithful to Him who appointed Him, as Moses also was faithful in all His house. 3 For this One has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as He who built the house has more honor than the house. 4 For every house is built by someone, but He who built all things is God. 5 And Moses indeed was faithful in all His house as a servant, for a testimony of those things which would be spoken afterward, 6 but Christ as a Son over His own house, whose house we are if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm to the end. P: Blessed are they who hear the Word of God and keep it! Alleluia! ALL SING: Alleluia!  Alleluia!  Alleluia!  These words are written that we may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God.   Alleluia!  Alleluia!  Alleluia!

CONFESSION OF FAITH – THE NICENE CREED ALL: I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible.       And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, Very God of Very God, Begotten, not made, Being of one substance with the Father, By whom all things were made; Who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven And was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the Virgin Mary And was made man; And was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate.  He suffered and was buried; And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures; And ascended into heaven, And sits at the right hand of the Father; And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead; whose kingdom will have no end.    And I believe in the Holy Spirit, The Lord and Giver of Life, Who proceeds from the Father and the Son, Who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, Who spoke by the Prophets.  And I believe one holy Christian and Apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, And I look for the resurrection of the dead, And the life of the world to come.  Amen.

Hymn 516

Sermon Text – New Testament Gospel – Luke 13:34 34 “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, but you were not willing!” Sermon Theme: Gospel results and responses: 1. Those who hear and believe it are saved because of GOD’S grace! 2. Those who hear and reject it are condemned because THEY were not willing!

ALL SING: Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.  Cast me not away from Your presence.  Take not Your Holy Spirit from me.  Restore to me the joy of Your salvation.  Uphold with Your Spirit free.

Hymn 154

The Offering is collected – sing Hymn 788: 1  – as printed here – 1. Lord, You love the cheerful giver Who with open heart and hand  Blesses freely as a river That refreshes all the land. Grant us, then, the grace of giving With a spirit large and true That our life and all our living We may consecrate to You.

P: Prayer ALL: Our Father, who art in heaven; Hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; And lead us not into temptation; But deliver us from evil; For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever.  Amen.

The Service of the Sacrament

P: The Lord be with you. C: (spoken) And also with you. P: Lift up your hearts. C: (spoken) We lift them up to the Lord. P: It is right and beneficial that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who brought the gift of salvation to all people by His death on the tree of the cross, so that the devil, who overcame us by a tree would in turn by a tree be overcome.  Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we magnify Your glorious Name, evermore praising You and saying:

ALL SING: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of Sabaoth, adored; Heav’n and earth with full acclaim shout the glory of Your name.  Sing hosanna in the highest, sing hosanna to the Lord; truly blest is he who comes in the name of the Lord!

WORDS OF INSTITUTION P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, the same night in which He was betrayed, took bread.  And when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to His disciples, saying, “Take, eat.  This is My body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of Me.”  In the same way He took the cup, after supper, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you.  This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins.  Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”                          The peace of the Lord be with you always!  Amen.

ALL SING: O Lamb of God, O Christ our Lord, whose blood, once shed, true life restored, Impart Your joy, our faith increase.  Sustain with Your mercy and grant us Your peace.

DISTRIBUTION of the SACRAMENT – Hymn 315 Communicant members of Faith Lutheran Church or of a sister CLC congregation are invited to come forward.  For more on our communion practice, please see the paragraph at the beginning of this bulletin regarding “communion.”  Thank you!

ALL SING: 1. O Lord, now let Your servant Depart in heav’nly peace, For I have seen the glory Of Your redeeming grace: A light to lead the Gentiles Unto Your holy hill, The glory of Your people, Your chosen Israel.  2. All glory to the Father, All glory to the Son, All glory to the Spirit, Forever three in one; For as in the beginning, Is now, shall ever be, God’s triune name resounding Through all eternity.

P: Go in peace.  Serve the Lord with gladness.

ALL SING: My heart has now become Your dwelling, O blessed, holy, Trinity.  With angels I, Your praises telling, Shall live in joy eternally.  Lord, may Your body and Your blood Be for my soul the highest good!

The Benediction P: The Lord bless you and keep you; The Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious unto you; The Lord lift up His countenance upon you, and give you His peace. ALL SING: Amen, Amen, Amen.
