Welcome, Worshipers! Third Sunday in Lent – March 11, 2012 Organists: Barry Hay, Ann Sprengeler Worship Service Schedule: TODAY – ONE SERVICE – 9:30 a.m.
WORSHIP SUPPLEMENT, SETTING 2 FOR THE MONTH OF MARCH 2012
Opening Prayer P: O God, our Father, whose praise is from those whom You have called from darkness to faith in Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins, uplift our souls to the holiness of Your presence, that with pure hearts we may adore Your name and worship You with joy on our lips, through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Redeemer and Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, forever and ever. Amen.
Hymn 157
Invocation P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. ALL SING: Amen.
Confession and Absolution P: We have come into the presence of God, who created us to love and serve Him as His dear children. But we have disobeyed Him and deserve only His wrath and punishment. Therefore, let us confess our sins to Him and plead for His mercy. ALL: Merciful Father in heaven, I am altogether sinful from birth. In countless ways I have sinned against You and do not deserve to be called Your child. But trusting in Jesus, my Savior, I pray: Have mercy on me according to Your unfailing love. Cleanse me from my sin, and take away my guilt. P: God, our heavenly Father, has forgiven all your sins. By the perfect life and innocent death of our Lord Jesus Christ, He has removed your guilt forever. You are His own dear child. May God give you strength to live according to His will. ALL SING: Amen.
The Service of the Word ALL SING: Lord, have mercy on us. Christ, have mercy on us. Lord, have mercy on us. 1. Glory to God, we give You thanks and praise; Of heav’nly joy and peace on earth we sing. We worship You, to You our hearts we raise, Lord God, almighty Father, heav’nly King. 2. Lord Jesus Christ, the Father’s only Son, You bore for us the load of this world’s sin. O Lamb of God, Your glorious vict’ry won, Receive our prayer, grant us Your peace within. 3. Alone, O Christ, You only are the Lord, At God’s right hand in majesty most high: Who, with the Spirit worshiped and adored, With all the heav’nly host we glorify.
P: Let us pray. Almighty God, we pray that You would look upon the heartfelt desires of Your humble servants and stretch forth the right hand of Your majesty to be our defense against all our enemies; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. ALL SING: Amen.
First Reading – New Testament – Epistle – Romans 5:17-6:2 Dead to sin, alive in Christ 17 For if by the one man’s offense death reigned through the one, much more those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.) 18 Therefore, as through one man’s offense judgment came to all men, resulting in condemnation, even so through one Man’s righteous act the free gift came to all men, resulting in justification of life. 19 For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so also by one Man’s obedience many will be made righteous. 20 Moreover the law entered that the offense might abound. But where sin abounded, grace abounded much more, 21 so that as sin reigned in death, even so grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. 6:1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? 2 Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it?
Second Reading – New Testament Gospel – Matthew 12:22-29 Jesus’ dominion over Satan 22 Then one was brought to Him who was demon-possessed, blind and mute; and He healed him, so that the blind and mute man both spoke and saw. 23 And all the multitudes were amazed and said, “Could this be the Son of David?” 24 Now when the Pharisees heard it they said, “This fellow does not cast out demons except by Beelzebub, the ruler of the demons.” 25 But Jesus knew their thoughts, and said to them: “Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and every city or house divided against itself will not stand. 26 If Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then will his kingdom stand? 27 And if I cast out demons by Beelzebub, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore they shall be your judges. 28 But if I cast out demons by the Spirit of God, surely the kingdom of God has come upon you. 29 Or how can one enter a strong man’s house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man? And then he will plunder his house.” P: Blessed are they who hear the Word of God and keep it! Alleluia! ALL SING: Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! These words are written that we may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!
CONFESSION OF FAITH – THE APOSTLES’ CREED ALL: I believe in God the Father almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, Born of the Virgin Mary; Suffered under Pontius Pilate, Was crucified, died, and was buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven And is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; From there He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit; The Holy Christian Church, the communion of saints; The forgiveness of sins; The resurrection of the body; And the life everlasting. Amen.
Hymn 369
Sermon Text – Old Testament – Isaiah 49:22-26 22 Thus says the Lord God: “Behold, I will lift My hand in an oath to the nations, And set up My standard for the peoples; They shall bring your sons in their arms, And your daughters shall be carried on their shoulders; 23 Kings shall be your foster fathers, And their queens your nursing mothers; They shall bow down to you with their faces to the earth, And lick up the dust of your feet. Then you will know that I am the Lord, For they shall not be ashamed who wait for Me.” 24 Shall the prey be taken from the mighty, Or the captives of the righteous be delivered? 25 But thus says the Lord: “Even the captives of the mighty shall be taken away, And the prey of the terrible be delivered; For I will contend with him who contends with you, And I will save your children. 26 I will feed those who oppress you with their own flesh, And they shall be drunk with their own blood as with sweet wine. All flesh shall know That I, the Lord, am your Savior, And your Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob.”
Sermon Theme: The Lord is our Savior and our Redeemer! 1) He graciously welcomes all into His family of faith! 2) He mercifully saves His people from their enemies!
ALL SING: Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from Your presence. Take not Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation. Uphold with Your Spirit free.
Hymn 143:1-4, 12, 13
The Offering is collected – sing Hymn 442:2 – as printed here – Grant us hearts, dear Lord, to yield Thee Gladly, freely, of Thine own; With the sunshine of Thy goodness Melt our thankless hearts of stone Till our cold and selfish natures, Warmed by Thee, at length believe That more happy and more blessed ‘Tis to give than to receive.
P: Prayer ALL: Our Father, who art in heaven; Hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; And lead us not into temptation; But deliver us from evil; For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.
The Benediction
P: The Lord bless you and keep you; The Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious unto you; The Lord lift up His countenance upon you, and give you His peace. ALL SING: Amen, Amen, Amen.
Closing Hymn 182
